for scholarship recipient

The Pike County Cattlewomen are now accepting applications for the Winnie Lee Memorial Scholarship which will be awarded to a deserving Pike County youth.

The scholarship is in the amount of $750 and will be awarded to a student who is or was a member in good standing for at least three years of either 4-H, FFA or FHA and is a resident of Pike County.

The student must also demonstrate academic excellence as determined by the Pike County Cattlewomen’s Association Scholarship Committee.

Betty Hixon, president of the Pike County Cattlewomen, said the scholarship is renewable as long as the recipient maintains a minimum GPA of 2.5 on a 4 point scale.

"In order to receive consideration for the scholarship, the students must complete a Pike County Cattlewomen’s Scholarship application and submit it to the Pike County Extension System office," Hixon said. "A current transcript should also be attached as well as three letters of recommendation."

Selection of the recipient will be made by an outside committee and will be based on a scorecard based on the application, Hixon said.

The Pike County Cattlewomen’s Association will pay to the scholarship recipient and the institution in one payment. The recipient must present the Cattlewomen’s scholarship committee with his or her letter of acceptance from any college or university.

"We have so many young people who are deserving of some assistance with the cost of college and we want to encourage any student who qualifies to apply for our scholarship," Hixon said.

Area high schools are being contacted with information about the Cattlewomen’s scholarship and information or copies of the application may be available through the principal or school counselor’s offices.

The scholarship is available, not only to high school seniors, but also to students who are enrolled in college.

"The application forms are available at the County Extension Office so that any student, high school or college, may apply," Hixon said.

The Pike County Extension System office is located at 306 South Three Notch Street in Troy.

Students wishing consideration for scholarship must submit all materials on or before April 14.
