For the second time in four days, a train and car collided in Troy on Monday afternoon.

Jessica Bozeman, 24, was traveling on Academy Street when she drove in the path of an oncoming train.

“I just put my head down and closed my eyes,” said James Norris, who witnessed the accident. “I was sure it was going to be horrible, but then I heard her wheels go in reverse.”

The train hit the front of Bozeman’s 1998 red Ford Escort and ripped the front bumper off, according to Troy Police. There was no damage to the train and it came to a stop about seven train cars from the point of impact.

“She backed up just in time,” Norris said. “She was shaking when she got out of the car.”

On Friday, police responded to a similar wreck on Dean Street in Troy. Witness reports to police indicate the driver of a 2001 red Pontiac Grand Am was using her phone when she drove across train tracks and was clipped in the side and rear by a train. The driver, Briana Hooten, 20, was not injured.

Again, in that case, the train came to rest about seven train cars from where the crash happened. The impact ripped the back bumper of that vehicle off and the driver’s side of the car was scraped and dented.

“It’s only a matter of seconds you are dealing with when you are trying to cross a railroad track,” said Troy Police Sgt. Benny Scarbrough.

Scarbrough said responding to two wrecks involving vehicles and trains is unusual in this short time frame.

“Be conscious of what you are doing when you are driving,” Scarbrough said. “You cannot be partially driving. Keep your eyes focused on the road and other traffic around you. Pay attention to traffic signs.”

Scarbrough said there was a yield sign posted at the site of Monday’s accident.
