Last weekend The Troy Trojans tied history.
This weekend the team as the opportunity to make it.
With a win today on the road against Louisiana-Lafayette, Troy will be the first team in Sun Belt history to go undefeated in conference play as well as the first team competing in Division 1 to win nine games.
“We are blessed to be sitting where we are sitting,” head coach Larry Blakeney said.
“I am proud of this team and this staff.”
“We sure would like to close this thing out with a clean slate in the League. They are playing pretty good right now. They have six wins right now and I know they will be inspired to try to get to the seven win plateau – they’ll be at home and it will probably be wild down there,” the coach added.
The Trojans enter the contest with a 8-3 overall record, and 7-0 record in the Sun Belt while ULL enters the game at 6-5 and 4-3.
The Ragin’ Cajuns lead the all-time series against the Trojans at 7-5, however Troy has won five of the last six meetings.
As Blakeney alluded to, playing ULL on the road can be wild, and the Trojans know this as the team has a 3-6 record in Lafayette.
The last time these two teams met, it was a blowout victory for the Trojans in Movie Gallery Veterans Stadium.
Running back DuJuan Harris rushed for a career-high 234 yards and two touchdowns in the 48-3 win.
“They are certainly good enough to beat anyone in the league,” Blakeney said about the Cajuns. “And they are certainly good enough to beat us.”
“They have been in some close, close ball games. They are a team that can get first downs and waste the clock – that’s a poisonous combination,” he added.
The coach did say his team would have a lot of motivation going into its last regular season game of the year.
“I think our battle cry going into the game will be trying to finish undefeated,” Blakeney said.
“Finishing the [regular] season strong is very important to us and a win would clear the water so to speak in terms of who the champion is and the postseason.
“I think this team has really developed a great, winning attitude at the season has gone on,” he said.
A big part of the Trojans’ success has come off the arm of senior quarterback Levi Brown.
So far this season, Brown has thrown for 3,575 yards, 19 touchdowns and has been named the Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Week a record five times this season.
“It’s really important for us [to finish off the season strong],” the quarterback said.
“Our goal at the beginning of the season was to win the conference but our side goal is to do it undefeated.
“We’re hoping to end the regular season on a good note with some momentum headed to a bowl game – there is some good motivation for us to win this game,” Brown added.
With just 114 more passing yards against ULL, the he quarterback will set a new Sun Belt passing record, however if Brown gets 425 yards he will become the first player ever to pass for 4,000 yards in a season.
All Brown wants however, is another win.
“The team is playing really well right now – we are all focused to what we are supposed to be doing. “We want to be the team that is the first to go undefeated,” he said.
The Trojans will go for history today against the Ragin’ Cajuns at 6 p.m.
