with a couple of weekend wins

The Charles Henderson Trojans opened up the game with a 17-0 run in the first period of last night’s game against Andalusia and ended the game with a 17 point victory over the visiting Bulldogs, 66-49.

The Trojans could do no wrong in the first quarter, as they crashed the boards with abandon, swiped loose balls and blocked shots. Charles Henderson ran off nine straight, capitalized by Marcus Johnson dunk, and forced Andalusia to burn a timeout in an attempt to halt the Trojans momentum. It didn’t work as CHHS came out to run off eight more and take a 21-2 lead at the end of the first.

Rory Murphy had the hot hand for Charles Henderson, finishing with 24 points. Joey Hollis and Marcus Johnson added 12 apiece.

In a defensive game filled with turnovers and steals, the Andalusia Lady Bulldogs hit their free throws down the stretch and ended up taking a 38-25 win over the Charles Henderson Lady Trojans.

Andalusia, with a distinct size advantage in the middle, forced the Lady Trojans into some bad shots and came down with plenty of defensive boards to hold a 13-8 advantage at the end of the first half.

Charles Henderson was able to pull within three, when point guard Jenean Deveridge drove the lane and put a layup in with 5:26 left in the game, But Andalusia came back with basket after basket to put the game out of reach.

Sophia Thomas, of Andalusia, led all scorers with 13. Deveridge, held to just two points in the first half, scored eight in the second to finish with 10 for the Lady Trojans.

In action Friday night, on the road, both the Trojans and Lady Trojans came away with wins.

The Charles Henderson boys’ team defeated the Wetumpka Indians by the score of 55-42. Murphy, once again, led the Trojans with 18 on the night and was followed by teammate Marcus Johnson with 11.

Kelly Miller scored13 points Friday night, as the girls’ squad came away with a decisive 44-26 victory over the Lady Indians.
