Drex Guthrie Classic returns next week to Troy Country Club

For the second consecutive year, the Emerald Coast Pro Golf Tour is coming to Troy. The Drex Guthrie Classic will begin at the Troy Country Club on June 12. The four-day event will feature over 30 professional golfers from across the country.
The Emerald Coast Pro Golf Tour provides players with the venues to develop their skills in order to progress to major tours.
Former graduates of the tour include Boo Weekley, Bubba Watson, Heath Slocum, Joe Durant, Brian Gay, Dickey Pride, Jerry Kelly, Josh Broadaway, and Ben Bates.
The event will feature several former Troy Trojans like Bates, Broadaway, Brandon Anthony, and Ricky Casko.
The Drex Guthrie Classic will begin with a practice round and kickoff party on Tuesday. The Pro-Am will be held on Wednesday, which will also be the Pros first round. The second and third rounds for the Pros will be held on Thursday and Friday. An awards ceremony will follow the final round.
The total purse for this year’s event in $50,000 with the winner receiving $12,500. Fred Houlton from Montgomery shot a 198 to take the title in 2011.
Seven players from last year’s tournament made it to the finals of PGA Tour School and Champions Tour Qualifying.
In addition to providing the area with the opportunity to watch some of golf’s future stars, The Drex Guthrie Classic raises money for local charities. Last year, the tournament raised over $8,000.
A kid’s clinic will be held on June 14, where local children will receive quality instruction from the visiting professionals.
