The unveiling Friday of glass artist Charles Adams’ two angels for 2009 will reveal the secret that he has kept close to the vest for several weeks now.

“Nobody knows except me,” Adams said with a smile. “These angels are named for a couple of people in the community and, of course, although they are specific to them, they are universal figures.”

However, a slip of the tongue did reveal that one of the angels is a grandmother figure.

“That’s all that I’m saying,” Adams said. “Nobody will know until Friday night.”

Charles and Mary Adams will host Open House at The Christmas Shoppe this weekend at Adams Glass Studio on Highway 231 between Troy and Brundidge.

“We invite everyone to come join us for wine and cheese from 6 until 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 27,” Adams said. “We always enjoy the fellowship of friends and neighbors at this time of year. For a couple of years, we broke with the tradition of hosting Open House the Friday after Thanksgiving.

“We did so in order to spend more time with our family but we realized that the Open House was such a tradition for our family that we all missed it. So this year, we’ve gone back to an old family tradition.”

The Open House will continue from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 28 and from 1 until 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 29 and will feature Adams’ work and also the work of seven other artists.

The big event will be the unveiling of the angels, especially for collectors who have made Adams’ angels a part of their family Christmas tradition for years.

“Angels make special gifts at any time of the year but especially at Christmastime,” Adams said. “These are two of my favorites but we’ve recut some of our most popular angels over the years and we’ll have three of them.”

Frances Davenport and Carol McCrady also feature angels in their work. Davenport has crochet angels and McCrady has papyrus angels.

Adams Glass Studio is known for its outstanding glasswork. Special Christmas glass items will be available including Nativity scenes and a variety of ornaments, including initial ornaments.

“We’ve got beveled crosses and stars and our 3D hummingbirds are also popular pieces,” Adams said. “We’ve got lamps, sun catchers and people really like our mobiles. They are interesting and fun pieces. And, we have stained glass and beveled panels.”

Walter Black of Troy will be back at the show with his unique pottery and Matt Brabbam of Florida has brought in a lot of new nature pottery pieces.

“Nita Crawford’s kiln fired glass is some of the best you’ll see and we have few pieces of the late Ed Walter’s kiln fired glass that we’re going to offer for sale,” Adams said. “Rex Thrash will be here with his birdhouses and walking sticks. We’ll have lots of talented people around and they will be glad to talk about their work. It’s going to be a lot of fun all weekend long. So, we invite everybody to stop by and visit as we renew an old tradition.”
