earn ‘cute kid’ label

The Peanut Butter Festival got off to an early start this year with the contest that peels the kids off the old Louis-Anne peanut butter label and puts them on parade as ambassadors for the popular foodstuff that was a sustaining factor in the Brundidge economy for 30 years.

Amy Fleming and Tyler Register were named the 1999 Peanut Butter Kids at the cute contest for cute kids Saturday night at the Knox Ryals pavilion in downtown Brundidge.

Judges had a difficult time putting a face on the kids on the label because each kid was as cute as a button, said Stephanie Carter, contest coordinator and reigning Miss Brundidge.

"We are excited about having the Peanut Butter Kids Contest earlier this year because the Kids will be more involved with the Festival activities," Carter said. "We are looking forward to Amy and Tyler being a part of the fun of the Festival."

Amy is a kindergarten student at Pike Liberal Arts School and she is the daughter of Elmer Gene and Wanda Fleming of Tarentum.

Tyler is a kindergarten student at Covenant Christian School. He is the son of Donnie and Roxanne Register of Troy.

Both kids said they are excited about being Peanut Butter Kids because Amy likes peanut butter "a lot" and Tyler said, "It’s gooood!"

The kids were awarded bicycles as prizes and they will ride their bikes when they lead the Nutter Butter Parade through downtown Brundidge on the day of the Peanut Butter Festival Oct. 30.

Wal-Mart SuperCenter of Troy donated the boy’s bike and the girl’s bike was donated by Jackson Hardware and the Brundidge Historical Society, sponsor of the annual Peanut Butter Festival.

Other contestant gifts and prizes were donated by Amy’s Boutique, Henry Farm Center and Hardee’s, all of Brundidge.

Mr. Pig from Piggly Wiggly and Miss Foxie of Fox’s Pizza in Brundidge passed out candy to all the kids and help ease a few cases of stage jitters.

The Peanut Butter Festival Clown (Cookie Graham) was on hand to congratulate all the kids and invite them to participate in all the Peanut Butter Festival activities.

The Troy School of Dance Cloggers were the featured entertainment for the contest. Those who performed to "Mickey" were Mindy Carter, Suzanne Ventress, Mary Vance Ventress, Sarah Taylor, Kaylee Hornsby, Sarah Jacobs, Bailey Dykes, Jenna McLendon, Megan Ellis, Christine Wood. Julea Maestri and Megan Hendrix. Lindsey Cox and Shelley Edwards performed "Walking on Sunshine."

Both groups received a resounding ovation from the appreciative crowd.
