The 13-U Troy soccer team came into the second day of the ARPA State Championships needing just one win to bring home a state title.

Unfortunately for Troy, it could not find the back of the net against Dothan, falling in the state championship game 2-0.

Troy was a bit short-handed, as it was missing a small number of players due to religious observances. Troy was also missing its head coach, Mark Salmon, meaning assistant coach Jay Wilson had to step in and take the reins of the team.

Despite the disadvantages coming into the game, Wilson made no excuses.

“We’ve got enough talent on this team,” Wilson said. “We took 18 for a reason. We just played a faster, bigger team. They gave us everything they had for two halves, but it just wasn’t meant to be, I guess.”

While the loss was a disappointing one, Wilson said the team had nothing to be ashamed of, and should be a force to be reckoned with in future seasons.

“I’m proud of everything they’ve done,” Wilson said. “They’ve worked hard, and I’m proud of every single one of them. Hopefully we’ll be back here in the same spot next year.”
