New Life Christian Church is “fishin’ on a mission with Jesus” this week as part of a Vacation Bible School program.

“We’re focusing in on, basically, the technique of fishing,” said Teacher Polly Laird. “[Also] how we can use that to be a witness for Christ and to draw men unto Him.”

Laird said the fishing theme was about anchoring the kids in the word of God.

The children are working on art projects, skits, choreography and enjoying outdoor games at VBS this week.

According to Laird, the enthusiasm of the children has increased this year, and the attendance level has also gone up.

One of the goals of this year’s VBS, Laird said, is teaching kids to be positive role models in their communities.

“We do need more of that character training to instill values in our young children so that we don’t have some of the problems that we may see in society as they get older,” Laird explained.

The teacher said she was overjoyed about the children’s opportunity to learn about Christ, and also excited for them to learn how to treat each other.

“It’s important to reach out to youth and people our age and let them know that God does love them,” said 14-year-old Jasia Guice, “And if they have no one to talk to, they can always go to God.”

Guice said she enjoyed learning different ways to tell young people about God without forcing her beliefs on them.

VBS at New Life Christian Church is being held from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. this week. The program is free and open to children ages 5-17.
