Virgil Pelfrey, Sr.

Mr. Virgil L. Pelfrey, Sr. passed away Thursday, August 13, 2009 at his home in Clio. He was 92 years old. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 16, at the Pea River Cemetery with the Revs. William B. Easterling and Roger Miller officiating and Keahey Funeral Home of Clio directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 15. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to Clio Baptist Church.
Mr. Pelfrey moved to Clio as a teenager, graduated from Barbour County High School in Clio, married his high school sweetheart, the late Grace Jackson Pelfrey, to whom he was married for 51 years and with whom he raised four sons. He served his country in WWII in the U.S. Navy. For many years he was a rural mail carrier, auctioneer and entrepreneur, and was a Deacon of Clio Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife Grace Jackson Pelfrey, and a son, Virgil L. Pelfrey, Jr. Also preceding him in death were his parents, John Henry Pelfrey, Sr. and Mary Nicholson Pelfrey, his infant sister, Pauline Pelfrey, and his three brothers, James Clyde Pelfrey, Carl Thomas Pelfrey, and John Henry Pelfrey, Jr.
He is survived by three sons, William V. Pelfrey, Sr., Richmond, VA, Robert J. Pelfrey, Abilene, TX, and Jackson L. Pelfrey, Clio, AL; two grandsons, William V. Pelfrey, Jr. and Brian N. Pelfrey; and three granddaughters, Anne A. Pelfrey, Jennifer J. Pelfrey, and Lauren N. Pelfrey.
