How do you get into Juilliard? Google it!
Euri Townsy, a 2007 graduate of Charles Henderson High School, said she found a summer workshop online and applied on a whim.
“I didn’t really think I would get in,” Townsy, 23, said. “But I was hoping.”
Townsy graduated from Alabama State University with a degree in English and currently teaches theater at Jefferson Davis High School in Montgomery. The residential 2012 Directing Workshop for Theater Educators is a professional development program that only 15 teachers in the United States were accepted into.
Townsy will be headed to the Big Apple next Friday and will study under directing fellows at the highly-acclaimed performing arts school that’s been the setting for many movies, and has produced top talents such as Kelsey Grammer, Kevin Spacey and award-winning composer John Williams.
“I’m excited about learning, I’m excited about seeing Broadway, but I’m most excited about meeting the other participants,” Townsy said.
Townsy said she and the others selected for the prestigious workshop will be studying Shakespeare and will have the opportunity to work hands-on with a show being produced at the world-renowned school.
Townsy teaches six classes comprised of about 30 students each in Montgomery and said she is thrilled to learn modern techniques and get ideas for inspiring students in the classroom.
“Most of them are taking theater because acting allows them to express themselves in different ways,” Townsy said. “I can relate because that is what I love about it, too. I can’t wait to learn more.”
