In the annual county volleyball matchup between Charles Henderson and Goshen, the two teams hit the court heading in different directions.

The Eagles entered the match at CHHS winning two of its first three, while the Trojans came in losers of three-straight matches.

When it was all said and done, the directions the teams were headed in at the beginning were the ones the teams stayed in, as GHS took three of four from CHHS.

After dropping the first game, 12-25, the Eagles flew to three-straight victories by the scores of 25-12, 25-19 and 25-10.

“We started off a little slow,” Eagles’ head coach Dee Hughes said.

“But once we got some momentum we were really able to turn things around.”

Kaitlin Thomas played a big role in the final game, as she scored 10-straight points for the Eagles.

The win improves GHS to 4-1 on the season.

As for the Trojans, the loss drops the team in orange and blue to 2-4 on the season, with all four losses from at home.

“We came in playing well,” head coach Jennifer Sikes said. “I thought we played well in our first game.

“But the rest of the match, we didn’t execute or do anything that we were supposed to – I think we came back from the first game a little over confident.”

Of the 12 points the Trojans had in the second game, four were earned, while of the 10 points in the final game, just three were earned.

Becca Hartley led the way for CHHS, scoring nine points, seven of which came from aces.

“Dee talked to her girls (after the first game) and they readjusted and did their jobs. I’m pretty baffled at this point,” Sikes said about her team’s recent play.

This the first of two matches for the Pike County teams, with the second taking place in Goshen on Sept. 13.

“It always feels good to get a win against (CHHS),” Hughes said.

“They always have a very good team and we have to play our best and we have to be ready against them.

“I’m proud of my girls for how they have started the season,” the coach added.

Now, the Trojans will head into area play against Rehobeth on Sept. 9.

“I thought we had a good practice (on Wednesday),” Sikes said. “But everything we practiced on, we did not do (Thursday).

“After that first game, we didn’t execute anything well.

“We are going to need people to step up for us – we need people that want to put W’s on the boards,” the coach added.

Goshen will look to continue its winning ways against Ariton, at home, on Sept. 9.

The CHHS JV squad defeated Goshen 25-13, 25-17.
