With the season well underway, the Pike Liberal Arts volleyball team is doing its best to find its own identity.

With nine players playing both varsity and JV, four of which are starting, it’s easy to see how they may be some growing pains along the way, but according to head coach Medny Avant, the team is right where they need to be.

“This team is really starting to come together now. We all knew it would take some time but they are looking better and better each day,” Avant said.

“It was difficult getting everyone in the right places (at the beginning of the season), but now, I think we have everything pretty close to being figured out.”

The Patriots played host to the Warriors of Lee Scott on Tuesday afternoon, however, did not come away with the outcome it had hoped for when it begin play.

Lee Scott swept through PLAS, winning 25-21, 25-21, and 25-10 but even in the loss, Avant said she is seeing a lot of good things.

“We did really well,” she said.

“We kept things close in both of the first two games and to see that against a team like Lee Scott was very impressive.”

Madison Sanders led the way for PLAS with two kills and an ace, while Mckenzi Johnson also finished with two kills.

Shelby Baggett finished with one kill and three aces.

The coach pointed out that there was not one missed serve in the match for PLAS, which was an area that has hurt the Patriots all season long to the tune of 10 points per match.

As for the JV squad, the also dropped its match to Lee Scott, falling in three games, 25-13, 6-25 and 12-15. Baggett finished with five aces while Kaliee Taylor added three aces of her own.
