A 24-year-old Troy man died early Monday in a Birmingham hospital after he was shot in a local residence around 1:30 a.m.

Troy Police responded to the reported shooting in the 100 block of Rose Circle, where James A. Jones was shot, according to information released by Chief Anthony Everage.

While the case remains under investigation, Assistant District Attorney Tom Anderson said the indident appears to have stemmed from a domestic situation.

“It appears at this stage the actions of the shooter were in self defense,” Anderson said. “There has been from what I understand a history of calls (to the police department) from the female in prior occasions regarding the male.”

Anderson said there is a 10-year-old witness to the crime who confirmed the shooter had been struck by Jones.

Because of the nature of the incident, Anderson said it is too early to tell if any action will be taken.

“It’s too early to say what if anything we’ll do, but right now, at this stage, it appears to be the result of something the shooter believed necessary to defend herself,” Anderson said.

He said it is likely the case would be presented to a Pike County Grand Jury at some point for consideration of any charges.

Troy Police Spokesman Sgt. Benny Scarbrough said Jones was transported to the Troy Regional Medical Center Emergency Room by Care Ambulance after the incident and later taken by Life Flight to UAB Hospital. Jones was pronounced dead around 10 a.m. at UAB, according to local authorities.
