Group leases old school

Time Served, Inc., a domestic non-profit corporation based in Goshen, has been awarded a 90-day lease for the old Shellhorn schoolhouse by the Pike County Board of Education.
The Rev. Charlie Sankey Jr., a member of the corporation, said there is no concrete business plan in place for the building at this time. However, the long-term plan is for the building to be renovated for use as a residential facility for the rehabilitation of young adult offenders.
“What we asked the board of education for at this time is for a lease that will give us the right to get on the premises to evaluate the building and begin the clean-up process,” Sankey said. “Getting the building in usable condition would be very costly so we would have to ask for a long-term lease in order to make it financially feasible.”
Sankey said he and the other members of the corporation took money out of their pockets to purchase the necessary liability insurance during the 90-day lease period.
Dr. Mark Bazzell, superintendent of Pike County Schools, said an extended lease will be contingent on the proposed use for the building.
“We would have to look closely at the way the building would be used,” Bazzell said. “It was my understanding that it would be used as a community center and for the benefit of the entire community. The board will have to have a clear understanding of the exact use for the building before moving forward with any lease agreements.”
