During the Miracle Field ceremonies Friday morning, many people, organizations and business were honored and thanked for their contribution to helping make the field a possibility in Troy.

One of groups thanked were not a business, a corporation or an organization, however.

It was a team of young boys who did what they could to help kids who are the same age enjoy the game the love so much.

Last year, during the tournament season, the Troy Pre-Minors baseball team decided it was going to raise money in support of the Miracle Field by doing the thing they did best – get hits.

“We wanted the kids to understand that while we wanted them to have fun on the playing baseball, there are more important things in life,” head coach Frank Scarbrough said about his 2009 team.

“After we told the kids about the Miracle Field and what it was, they wanted to help immediately – and I knew then that we had a special group.”

Throughout the summer the team went on to play in both the District and State Tournaments and collected over 200 hits and close to $6,200.

And even though Scarbrough’s team didn’t win the state championship, he said he and his team came away with something better than a trophy.

“To me, personally, I was more proud of the common bond between the kids,” the coach said.

“They cared about others more than themselves – and that will be far the greatest memory I take from that season.”

Now, less than a year later after making the donation to the Troy Lions Club for the Miracle Field, the team was still being praised for its good will.

At Friday’s ceremonies, everyone from Mayor Jimmy Lunsford to Senator Wendell Mitchell honored the team for its works and as the ceremony was coming to a close, the team was at the receiving end of the first pitches from potential Miracle Field players and donors.
