All that came between the Troy Pre-Minor team from winning the Sub-District championship Thursday night in Brundidge was not another team but Mother Nature.

Troy was a mere three outs away from claiming the title when the game was called due to rain.

Now, the team will have to wait one more night for the championship victory, in a game that it is currently winning 12-3 in.

“It’s just one of those things,” head coach Andy Blair said about the game being suspended. “Just bad luck.”

“But we are going to treat (Friday) just like the score is 0-0 and play defense as well as we can.”

Greenville got off to a fast start, scoring three runs in the first two innings and taking a 3-1 lead.

But Troy would respond in a big way.

In the third inning, the team was able to tie the game thanks to back-to-back hits from Payne Griffin and Cole McWhorter that brought Brax Barron and Griffin.

Ty Singleton broke that tie with a hit to center field that brought home McWhorter, to give Troy a 5-3 lead. After the defense held Greenville scoreless for a second consecutive inning, the Troy offense came to life again, scoring seven runs and taking a commanding 12-3 lead.

Caden Bryan, Holden Hollingshead, Barron, Logan Stephens, Griffin, McWhorter all had RBIs in the inning.

The team also collected 11 hits in the explosive inning.

“The team really settled down and started to play well,” Blair said.

“Hopefully, they will be able to do that again.”

Shortly after the bottom of the fourth inning, the skies opened up and the game was suspended in the top of the fifth.

Today, Troy will look to finish on top when play will resume at 5 p.m. in Brundidge.
