The Troy Ponytails had a dismal offensive performance against Dothan national Monday night in sub-district play, as they were no-hit by three Dothan pitchers in a 3-0 loss.

Troy had just two base runners all game, and none after the second inning.

“Like it is with any group of kids, sometimes they’re on and sometimes they’re not,” head coach Terry Motes said. “But, you have to hit the ball better. You have to score runs to win, no matter how good your defense is. You have to have an offense to go along with it.”

Troy struck out 10 times at the plate, and struggled with control in the circle.

Dothan scored three runs on just four hits, but was helped by nine Troy walks, as well as several passed balls and wild pitches.

“There shouldn’t be any talk about control issues or any other excuses,” Motes said. “There should just be softball. You have to play ball in order to compete, and we just didn’t compete tonight. We have to regroup and get back on our game.”

Dothan scored in the bottom of the first on an RBI groundout from Amanda Myhand.

The Nationals added two more runs in the third when Coryenne Hendershott drove in a run with an RBI single and Maegan Welding scored from third on a wild pitch.

Troy now faces an uphill battle if it hopes to win the sub-district championship. The Trojans will play Ozark today at 6 p.m. in an elimination game.

The winner of that game will play Dothan National Wednesday, and will have to beat Dothan twice in order to win sub-district.

“They’re still capable of winning this tournament, but they just have to come out and play ball,” Motes said.
