The Troy O-Zone Rookies got off to a good start in district, defeating Enterprise American 4-2.
After the game, head coach Ashley Floyd said the low-scoring affair was not something he anticipated.
“It was the complete opposite of what I expected,” Floyd said. “A week ago, I never would have throughout we could have played this game. But, after the week of work we’ve had in practice, I knew we could play this way.”
Bryson Gandy proved to be the star of the Troy team, as he pitched the final four innings for the win, and also drove in two runs, scored two runs and hit a two-run home run in the third inning.
“Bryson will do things like take a little something off his fastball, and that comes to natural to him,” Floyd said. “He’s doing it on his own. He kept his composure, and he didn’t really walk anybody. That’s what scared me coming in is walks, but we didn’t walk many tonight.”
Enterprise only had three hits, and Floyd said the win was even more impressive considering the competition.
“I think we beat the better Enterprise team tonight,” Floyd said. “They didn’t give up any runs in three games in a warm-up tournament, but we came up and hit the ball extremely hard.”
Now, Troy will try to carry over its momentum into tonight’s game against Eufaula.
“I think all they needed was a little confidence, and they have it now,” Floyd said. “They’re believing in themselves and believing in each other, and that’s where it all starts.”
