Less than two weeks after their a disappointing end to their season, Goshen softball coaches Dee Hughes and Amy Warrick are back on the field, this time with a new group of girls.

The two are now coaching the Troy Hit Squad, a second-year travel ball softball team made up of nine year olds.

The team will be heading into its second live pitching tournament this weekend at the Troy Sportsplex.

This is the age where the girls will begin to learn how to pitch and learn how to hit live pitching and while it can be a difficult time for some teams, Hughes said she has like the progress she has seen.

“We have gained some strides and learned a lot in the last two weeks.

“This team has started to play together and they are starting to feel more comfortable and that is always really important,” the coach said Wednesday night at the Sportsplex.

There will be 10 other teams competing in the tournament, with the first opponents for the Hit Squad being the Columbus Peaches, based out of Columbus, Ga., and the Bama Extreme, who is based out of Montgomery.

“It’s been fun (coaching the girls),” Hughes said.

“They are all still new to (player) pitching, but once they figure it out, it will be contagious and everyone will start hitting.”
