A spring concert under the stars has been a Troy University Concert Band tradition for several years. This year, the band is breaking with tradition but only the stars will be missing.

Tonight’s concert will feature the usual sweet and grand sounds that welcome spring to Troy and Pike County.

But the music will be coming from the Claudia Crosby Theater on the campus of Troy University.

“This is not the traditional location for the spring concert,” said Ray Smith, Troy University Concert Band director.

“The amphitheater, where the concert is usually presented, is surrounded by construction. Troy University’s renovation of Bibb Graves Hall has all alumni and friends looking forward to the facility but it is causing some short term (location) problems.”

Smith said an old-fashioned band concert is a great way to welcome spring, whether it’s outside or inside.

“This year’s band will be performing classic literature, including traditional marches like ‘National Emblem,’ ‘The Liberty Bell’ and the “Shostakovich Festive Overture,’” Smith said.

Dr. Larry Blocher will conduct several tunes including Robert Smith’s “Songs of Sailors and the Sea.”

Johnny Brewer, Wallace Community College director, will be the special guest conductor.

The concert will conclude with the music of Henry Mancini.

The concert begins at 6:30 p.m. and will last about an hour. Admission is free.

“Everyone is invited to come and enjoy an evening of great band music in the Claudia Crosby Theater,” Smith said.
