Eight games down, one to go.

As the regular season winds down for the Pike County Bulldogs, the team is currently starring perfection in the eyes.

Coming into it’s regular season finale against Geneva this Friday, the Bulldogs, having already accomplished one of its goals by winning the 3A Region 2 championship, are looking to seize another by going undefeated in the regular season.

“This was a group people that came together wanting to accomplish the same goals,” Stephenson said to his team after it had just won the region.

“I’m so proud of what this team has been able to accomplish this year.”

Last week, in what was thought to be the Bulldogs’ toughest test of the season, the Bulldogs shut down Daleville, 34-0.

Led by senior quarterback Josh Parker, the Bulldogs dominated the Warhawks, jumping out to a 21-0 in the first half and never looked back.

Parker finished the game with four total touchdowns, two on the ground and two through the air.

“We needed to play the way we did to win to win that game [against Daleville],” Stephenson said Wednesday night.

“I think that was the best we had played all season long.”

Both the offense and defense have been at the top of its games and a big reason for the Bulldogs’ success.

The offense has scored 30 or more points five different times, while the defense has held its opponents to opponents to 10 points of fewer six times.

Altogether, the Bulldogs have outscored their opponents 250-57.

Even though the team has both the region and a playoff spot locked up, Stephenson still says there is a lot more to accomplish.

“A lot is still at stake for us,” Stephenson said.

“Having a perfect season is something that doesn’t come by all that often so that means a lot to us.

“The last time this team play Geneva a couple years ago it was a real barn burner but in the end Pike County lost. This has been a year of redemption for us and it will continue with Geneva.”

The Bulldogs final tune up before they play host to a playoff game will be the Panthers of Geneva.

The Panthers come into the game with a 3-5 overall record, 3-3 in region play.

The team is also currently on a two game winning streak, beating both Slocomb and Wicksburg.

“It’s important for us to come away with a win,” Stephenson said.

“This is our last chance to get ready for the playoffs.”

As far as how the preparation for the game has gone, Stephenson said that his team is still enjoying last week’s win.

“We have had a decent week of practice,” the coach said. “And I think that is to be expected coming off such big win.”

“We need to come out and play the way we have all season long and we look forward to getting the kids ready and focused for this last game.”

The Bulldogs will look to make in nine-in-a-row on Friday as they travel down to play Geneva.

The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
