Peanut Butter Festival week will kick off tonight in downtown Brundidge with the annual Brush Arbor Congregational Singing on the grounds of the historic Bass House.

The Brush Arbor Singing is a throwback to the old days when singings were held under a brush-covered arbor to keep out the sun.

However, since the singing is held after sundown, there is no need for the outdoor arbor but the spirit of the old-time singings is still the same.

The Brush Arbor Singing is a non-denominational event that celebrates yesteryear.

“The Brush Arbor Singing draws a large crowd every year and is an event that many people look forward to all year long,” said Jimmy Ramage, CEO of First National Bank of Brundidge, sponsor of the event.

“The singing is like an old-timey gathering and we want to make sure that everyone knows they are invited – all around the county and beyond.”

The singing will begin at 7 p.m. but everyone is invited to come early and enjoy cider and peanuts and the fellowship of friends and neighbors.

When the singing begins, everyone is invited to join in the singing of the old familiar hymns that have inspired and comforted generations of Southerners.

The singing will be led by employees of First National Bank and song sheets will be provided.

Bleachers will be available but those who wish to bring lawn chairs are encouraged to place their chairs so the stage will be visible to them.

The Brush Arbor Singing is time of praise and worship and everyone is asked to mindful of that.

“The evening will be one to long remember and, again, we want to invite everyone to Brundidge tonight for the Brush Arbor Singing,” Ramage said.

“It’s a great way to get ready for all of the Peanut Butter Festival activities planned for Saturday.”
