This morning, a little under 200 Troy residents did there part in the fight against a deadly disease.

The first annual Fight Like A Girl 5K run and mile walk took place this morning in downtown Troy as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The race began at 8 a.m. this morning taking its runners all through downtown Troy and finishing at the square.

The walk began shortly after the race concluded.

“It was a huge success,” Jason Jones, Chairman for the event, said.

“It is great to be involved with an event like this that will help others.

“Everyone that participated was involved for a reason. To be able to raise awareness and funds for cancer research and awareness is a wonderful thing,” Jones added.

Jones said the event raised close to $4,000, which was almost double what the Pike County board members expected.

“The goal was to raise about $2,000,” Jones said.

“Very happy that we were able to exceed expectations – this will become an annual event, one way or another.”

After both the race and the walk were finished, a ceremony took place in the square that had Mayer Jimmy Lunsford read a proclamation designating October as a special time of awareness for breast cancer and made Oct. 10 Breast Cancer Awareness Day for the City of Troy.

As for the race itself, there were 11 different classifications for the 3.1 mile run with 11 different winners.

Troy resident, Kelly Grenon was the overall winner with a time of 20.37 minutes.

“It feels awesome to be a part of something like this,” he said. “It really is a great cause to be fighting for.”

Each of the winners received a medal and everyone that participated received a goodie-bag and t-shirt.

“It means a lot to be participating in something like this,” Troy resident Jonathan Sellers said after the race.

“It was a good race, and there were a lot people from the City of Troy out here supporting the runners, which is always great to see.”
