I would like to say a big thank you to all the households in Troy that were not bullied by an unsigned letter left on the mailbox and participated in trick-or-treating on Halloween night.

It was great to see all the decorated homes and wonderful costumes the night of October 31st, which as anyone with a calendar knows, is Halloween.

I remember last year there was a home Troy football game on Halloween night. Our family had to make a choice. We could miss our first home game of the season and trick-or-treat or we could go to the game. What we never considered as an option was driving around throughout our great city imposing our will on our neighbors.

I’m sure some households gave out candy on both nights. I also understand this was optional and no one had to participate in Saturday night trick-or-treating. But it is obvious that many throughout Troy thought these letters were official. These unsigned flyers were anything but official. They may not even be legal. Opening a mailbox is against postal regulations, but since these were put between the box and flag, the people spreading them may not have broken any laws.

This year October 31st fell on a Sunday and may have interfered with church. Next year it will fall on Monday and may interfere with parents who work nights. The year after that it might interfere with someone’s grocery shopping plans.

Thankfully, the year will be 2021 before we have to worry about a Sunday night Halloween again.
