The Troy University chapter of the Kappa Delta sorority wrapped up its Fall Shamrock philanthropy event by marching to the Troy Police Department on Wednesday afternoon with teddy bears in hand.

The sisters of the sorority presented the police department with more than 280 teddy bears for use in the field. The stuffed animals are given to children by the police whenever a child is dealing with a traumatic experience.

Troy Police Chief Jimmy Ennis said the amount of bears was more than the department expected.

“We are a little overwhelmed,” said Ennis with a smile. “They obviously have done a great job collecting the teddy bears, and we greatly appreciate it.”

The amount of bears exceeded the amount of need by the Troy Police Department. To make sure all the bears are put to good use, the Troy Police Department will donate a portion of the bears to the Pike Regional Child Advocacy Center and the Troy University Police Department.

Julie Murphy, KD vice president-community service, said that the bears hold special meaning to the sisters of the sorority.

“The bears mean a lot to us, because they are out mascot,” said Murphy. “But every child should have a stuffed animal.”

Murphy also said that the sorority is proud to donate time and gifts to the local community, where they can see the good be done.

“Giving back to the community of Troy and to the police officers here means a lot to the entire sorority,” said Murphy. “They do so much. We just try to help as much as we can.”

The Kappa Delta sisters are hosting a football tournament on Oct. 21 to help raise money for the Pike Regional Child Advocacy Center.
