Nothing has come easy for the Charles Henderson basketball team so far.

The team has started the season off to a 0-6 record, with tough losses to Dothan, Enterprise on the road and Greenville at home last Thursday night.

But the team is hoping early season jitters turn into mid season confidence.

One of the biggest crutches for the team in the early going has been its inability to find the basket.

As the Trojans enter its seventh game of the season, it does so with a low shooting percentage.

Currently, CHHS is averaging around 33 percent from the floor, with its 3-point shooting slightly worse at 28 percent.

Against Opelika in the Enterprise tournament, the Trojans shot a season best 53 perfect from the field and 50 percent from beyond the arc, however, in its most recent game against Greenville, CHHS shot just 18 percent and 36 percent.

Head coach Carl Hollis said while the team’s shooting performance is a concern, it can be corrected by getting his team in shape.

“We have spent a good part of this week working on our conditioning,” Hollis said right before his team’s Thursday practice.

“Poor shooting is a sign of being out of shape. If you are struggling up and down the court, you are going to have a hard time shooting the ball – you are going to have a hard time playing good basketball.

“Our guys have been playing hard, but we need them to work harder. They have shown that they are unwilling to quit, which is a good, good sign.”

With the team’s last game taking place a week and a day ago, the Trojans have had plenty of opportunity to use that conditioning to its advantage.

And it will look to do so against its next opponent – Jeff Davis.

Like the Trojans, the Yellowjackets have struggled out of the gate, entering the game with a 1-5 record.

But Hollis was quick to point out that there is a lot more to Jeff Davis than a losing record.

“Jeff Davis plays hard for 32 minutes, every game,” the coach said.

“They are a well coached team, they are a well disciplined team. They are going to bring a lot of pressure at us and they are going to make things difficult for us all over the floor. This is a team that we have to be ready for.”

The Trojans will shoot for the first win of the season, tonight at CHHS, with a tip off scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
