Many may not realize the struggles high school students face. That’s not the case for Pike County High’s Nakia Hancock.

Hancock has been a full-time high school student, part-time employee, and moved several times, all while serving as a second mother to her two brothers and sisters. She didn’t let any of that stand in her way.

And Thursday, members of the Troy Exchange Club recognized that by awarding her with a $1,000 ACE (Accepting the Challenge of Excellence) Program scholarship, a fund created for high school students who achieve despite physical or emotional struggles.

“Most would agree she has reasons to become bitter. She’s become better,” said Diane Aman, at the Exchange Club luncheon Thursday.

This is the third year the Exchange Club has given this scholarship to a deserving local high school senior.

Students are nominated by staff of the high school, in Hancock’s case by her guidance counselor/teacher Sharon Sullivan, someone she considers a second mother.

“I’ve taught Nakia three times. She’s never slept in any of my classes, but I’ve have to tell her to put her book away. That’s why she’s one of the top readers in our school,” Sullivan said. “I can’t say enough about her. She’s an excellent student who’s overcome many things and makes herself a beacon to her family and everyone else.”

Hancock’s goal is to become a veterinarian. She’s been accepted to several colleges already

Aman said she hopes to see Hancock again at the Exchange Club, telling her stories of being a vet in a wildlife preserve.
