CHHS fight back for 5-4 win

The Charles Henderson Trojans did not have to travel too far to face off against Thursday’s opponent, Enterprise.
The bus ride back was a joyful one, all the same.
Thanks to some late inning heroics, the Trojans were able to sneak by the Wildcats with a 5-4 win.
CHHS took the lead in the top of the seventh inning, when the Trojans scored three runs.
The win keeps the team perfect at 3-0.
Senior Chase Connell finished 3-4 with two RBIs while eighth grader Chase Smart finished 2-4 with an RBI.
It was a Connell single up the middle with the bases loaded that tied the game up, followed by a Joey Denison sacrifice fly to center that put the Trojans ahead for good.
“For the first time all year, we were faced with some adversity,” head coach Derek Irons said.
“And I was not pleased with how we handled it early on.
“We were pressing offensively, we got away from quality at bats. But we were fortunate to finish strong. I would have liked our guys to answer the bell a little quicker. We got the win in the end, but there are lot of things to learn and improve upon, from this game.”
Michael Fox got the win for the Trojans, pitching three innings in relief, giving up just one hit, while striking out five.
Sophomore Tripp Blackmon got his first varsity start, and threw four innings, giving up no earned runs and striking out three.
The Wildcats were able to push three runners across the plate against Blackmon thanks to several CHHS errors.
“I thought Tripp did really well for us (Thursday night),” Irons said.
“He showed a lot of maturity in battling through the adversity he faced and kept us in the game. That’s not easy to do sometimes when the defense is not helping out.”
CHHS will be back in action on Saturday, taking on both Hillcrest and Stanhope-Elmore at Stanhope Elmore.
