Straight-line winds are believed to have caused damage in several areas of Pike County on Wednesday.

“We had reports of damage on nine different county roads,” said Pike County EMA Director Jeanna Barnes. “At first they thought it was a tornado, but after an assessment team came in they’re thinking it may have been straight-line winds.”

Barnes said the storm began in the Springhill area of the county around 10 a.m. Wednesday morning and quickly moved to the south and east towards Tarrennum, Brundidge and Dale County, where it caused more damage in areas such as Arinton.

“It lasted for about 20 or 30 minutes,” she said.

“We had some big oak trees snapped in half and uprooted, lots of tops of pine trees snapped off, a roof ripped off the deck of a mobile home, a carport damage, several trees down … that type of damage,” Barnes said. “As far as I know, no one was injured, but we did have spotty power outages.”

Barnes said damage was reported on County Roads 3339, 3340, 3341, 3346, 3328, 3338, 3319, 4432 and 4430.
