The Pike Liberal Arts Patriots opened their Termite, Pee Wee and junior high football seasons Tuesday against Prattville Christian Academy.

For Termite head coach Mark Knotts, the fun of starting the season has been going since practice began.

The Termite team is made up of 3rd and 4th graders, many of whom are playing football for the first time.

Despite the inexperience, Knotts said he is pleased with his group of players. “These kids listen better than any other group I’ve ever seen,” Knotts said.

“Even though it’s their first time, they listen well. They just pay attention and do what they’re supposed to do.”

Knotts said the joy derived from football by the players was only exceeded by the joy coaching the team brings him. “It’s probably more fun for me than it is for them,” Knotts said. “We want them all to play and we want them all to have fun.”

Knotts said coaching the young players helps to keep the focus on having a good time. “Obviously, winning is important, but it’s not the most important,” Knotts said. “We want them all to play and have a good time. Hopefully, they’ll grow to love the game and continue to play.”

While winning may not have been the most important thing to Knotts, his team did exactly that Tuesday, defeating Prattville Christian Academy 32-6.
