Economic conditions have taken a toll on many agencies, and there’s no exception when it comes to the Troy City Schools system.

“We all know what the situation the economy is in. Prices have skyrocketed,” said Jimmy Matthews, interim superintendent.

And those “skyrocketing” prices caused the Troy City Board of Education to approve a slight increase in school lunch prices in its meeting Monday.

Student breakfast will cost $1 and student lunch $1.75, and adult breakfast will cost $1.75 and adult lunch $2.50.

“It’s still the best deal in town,” said Roxie Kitchens, school board president.

Matthews said the school board paid around $60,000 more for the child nutrition program this year than it did last year.

In the midst of a superintendent search, the board also voted to keep its current officers for the next school year. Roxie Kitchens will still serve as president and Judson Edwards as vice president.

“I do appreciate the confidence. Because we are in the middle of a superintendent search, I’m willing to serve until that is complete,” Kitchens said.

Edwards was not present at the meeting.

The board also approved a project to add a new roof to the Troy-Pike Center for Technology. The low bid went to KC Construction at $245,553, and the price will be split between the city and county school boards.

Matthews also introduced Dual Enrollment Policy to board members Monday, but the board won’t take action until its June meeting. In personnel action the board accepted the retirements of Jannie Day and Lynn Helms, both resource teachers at Troy Elementary School, and Cindy Miller, an instructional specialist at TES. The board also accepted the resignation of Jonathan Yarbrough, building construction and carpentry teacher at the Troy-Pike Center for Technology. The last day of school for Troy City Schools is May 26. The Hank Jones Early Childhood Education Center will dismiss at 12:45 p.m. and the other schools at 1:10 p.m. Teachers’ last day will be May 27.

The next board meeting will be June 20 at 5:15 p.m.
