Alabama Sen. “Walking” Wendell Mitchell is getting ready to walk once again.

At least that’s what Mitchell, D-Luverne, hopes to do as he seeks reelection to the senate in the 2010 election.

Mitchell announced Tuesday he would seek the office once again, after serving in his seventh four-year term this year.

“Number one, my health is excellent. I feel as well as I have in a long time, and this job requires that,” Mitchell said.

“I still feel I can do a lot of good for a lot of people.”

If Mitchell is elected this time, he will be in line to claim the top seniority spot on the Senate floor, something that he said would benefit the counties he serves.

“The seniority involved is invaluable,” Mitchell said.

“Should I be reelected, it puts me in a position to do more for my constituents.”

Mitchell currently holds the title of deputy president pro-tempore on the Senate, the number two position of leadership among all Senators. He is also head of the Governmental Affairs Committee and the Joint Sentate-House Committee on Energy Policy.

Mitchell serves as representative for Pike, Autauga, Butler, Crenshaw, Elmore and Lowndes Counties, and he boasts bringing in more dollars for his district than any other representative.

“I don’t know of any senator who has brought to his district more state funds and state projects than I have,” Mitchell said.

Mitchell also said he is proud of work with Troy University, working to bring the institution’s state appropriations level with other university’s in Alabama.

“Their appropriation had always trailed behind, and I led the way to make sure parity was gained by Troy,” Mitchell said.

Mitchell has also been named “Legislator of the Year” by several organizations over many years of service, and he has been chosen six times to serve as Alabama’s chief spokesman in the Southern Legislative Conference and the County of State Governments, according to a press release from Mitchell’s office.

Mitchell is married to the former Rosalind McBride, of Greenville, and has three adult children.
