Farmers get small reprieve on state taxes

When it comes to tax season, any bit of good news is cause to smile.
This week, the Alabama Department of Revenue announced it would follow federal tax fling relief being offered to farmers and fishermen.
That means farmers or fishermen who are unable to file and pay their 2012 federal taxes by the March 1 deadline due to the delayed start of the tax filing season will be granted relief from both federal and state penalties.
Because most Alabama farmers, including many here in Pike County, pay quarterly estimated taxes on Feb. 28, the state Department of Revenue has acknowledged that the delayed start to the tax season likely impacts the ability of farmers to meet that deadline.
Now, state farmers or fishermen who miss the Feb. 28 deadline, will not be subject to the penalty taxes, as long as they file and pay taxes by April 15.
It’s a small reprieve, but for the thousands of farmers and fishermen across the state who are affected by the delayed start to tax season, it is a welcome one.
