Brundidge woman’s lifetime love for design, art evolves from hobby

Susie Waters has always had an eye for tasteful designs. As a child, she would sew and crochet with her mother and grandmother. As a teen in college at Troy State University, she would often find projects to occupy her time between classes and tests. It’s something she has always loved.

“I was involved in Girl Scouts and 4-H and that’s when I really got interested in sewing and knitting on my own,” Waters said. “I’ve always loved handmade things. That’s one of my pastimes, my hobby. To do something that is unusual or unique that I can make is special to me.”

Waters, a resident of Brundidge, created everything from handmade scarves to built-from-scratch lamps. As time went along she began placing some of her things in antique and consignment stores and it quickly became apparent that others appreciated her creations as much as she did.

Waters, a teacher by trade, now has items in numerous stores including The Confetti Crate in Troy and The Highlands Antique Mall in Dothan.

Over the years, Waters has shifted her attention from one genre of arts and crafts and then back again. One of her other loves is painting and re-purposing furniture. Reviving older pieces that just need a little tender loving care to be brought back to life.

“I’ve been painting for the last 10 years or so. I love bringing pieces back to life,” she said.

One of Waters’ newest aides which she will offer at The Confetti Crate is the Amy Howard line of chalk and milk based paints.

“I’m really excited about this new product,” she said. “It is something that people who enjoy painting will love.”

The new product line is expected to be in-store by mid-March.

Though Waters has created innumerous items, she still enjoys the challenges and the result.

“It’s the end product. To know that you can do something,” Waters said. “I keep multiple projects going all the time. I like to learn how to do new things all the time, to show myself that I can. I can kind see things in my mind, but doing them is another story. It’s fulfilling to see them fall into place.”
