The Troy Belles wrapped up their season Saturday after losing its second straight game at the state tournament in Hartselle.

Troy lost to Montgomery Gray 6-2 Saturday in the second game after falling to Underwood Friday in its first game.

Troy led 2-0 after five innings on an RBI single by Mary-Michael Dunn and a solo homer by Hannah Fountain.

However, much like the tourney opener against Underwood, errors late in the game proved to be Troy’s undoing.

“It was really basically a repeat of the first game,” said Troy head coach Steve Finlayson. “We just made a few errors late in the game that led to the other team having one big inning that cost us the game.”

Montgomery Gray scored six runs in the sixth to take the game 6-2.

Fountain led Troy, going 2-3 with one RBI and a homer, while Dunn, Alli Ellis and Conleigh Gilmore all had base hits in the game.

Finlayson said with the exception of two innings, his team played well at the tournament.

“It was just a defensive game,” Finlayson said. “We had one bad inning in both games that wound up costing us the game. Other than those two bad innings this weekend, we played pretty well. I tried to stress that to the girls that they played well, but it just wasn’t meant to be. They all seemed pretty upbeat after the game, so hopefully they can make another run at this thing next year.”

Finlayson said the trip to state was a good learning experience for the team.

“I’m very pleased with how they played,” Finlayson said. “They did real well. It was some of these girls first time playing at this level, and they responded real well. It was just a real positive thing for everyone involved. In the end, we were one of only seven teams in the state that made it that far, so you have to be proud of that. This is the first time in a while that a Belles team from Troy has made it to state, so I was real pleased. I thin the girls were happy with their season, too.”

While the team may have been happy with making it to state, it has a great chance to do even more next year.

“We only have three 15-year-olds on the team,” Finlayson said. “All our pitching will be back for next year. We probably had one of the youngest teams up there.”

We hop everyone that can come back will come back next year. If they’ll come back, we’ll probably be even better next year.
