Organizers are only $75,000 from their fund-raising goal to create a new playground in Troy where all children – including those with special needs – will be able to play together in a safe environment.

Although there is $124,000 in the bank now, and more money pledged, a June 1 deadline is looming for the Miracle League Playground.

“We are looking at the months of April and May for raising money, and that’s it,” said Dan Smith, director of Troy Parks and Recreation. “We are hopefully going to reach our goal and even surpass it for additions to what we have already negotiated with contractors.”

The Troy Miracle League Field that opened during the summer of 2011 is one of 127 in the United States. The playground will be built near the Miracle League Field and will be the centerpiece for a new family park that will continue to grow.

The playground will be one of 25 within the Miracle League and will feature a rubberized safety surface that will allow children with walkers, wheelchairs and other special needs to go to transfer stations on the playground. Doublewide ramps will help wheelchairs to travel through the playground easily. There will also be activity panels and other structural features designed to promote creativity for all children – including those with Autism and other needs.

“We are depending on donations, and the community has responded,” Smith said. “We know that there are a number of groups working on fund-raisers.”

One of those groups is made up of Troy University students who are participating in Greek Week. The Miracle League Playground is one of three organizations to benefit from money raised during a series of friendly competitions between Greeks.

Also, area businesses have begun to place plastic jugs on counters to collect “Pennies for the Park.” Local schools are even participating in that effort during the month of April.

“We have sent a number of letters out to businesses in Pike County asking them to consider a contribution to this playground project,” Smith explained. “We hope that will generate some positive response from our local business community.”

Smith shared that he’s already had visits and phone calls from several business leaders who have made verbal pledges. He’s even heard that some Sunday school classes have been raising money. Whether it is $5, $10 or more, Smith said every donation is needed and helpful.

“We are very thankful,” Smith said.
