A lot has happened since the Charles Henderson Trojan baseball last tasted defeat.

Venzuelan president Hugo Chavez died, sequestration took full affect in the federal government, and Florida Gulf Coast University has risen from a small coastal school to a national media darling since Feb. 28, when the Trojans lost to Northview.

On Monday afternoon, Charles Henderson suffered it’s first loss in over three weeks, losing to Southside-Gadsden 11-3.

Charles Henderson head coach Derek Irons said that his team didn’t play their best baseball against a very talented opponent and paid the consequences.

“That is usually what happens, when you don’t play your best,” said Irons. “When you meet good pitching, and don’t have things clicking, you usually wind up on the short end of things.”

Even in the loss, Irons said he was proud of the performance of some his players, including Blake Craft.

Craft came on in as a relief pitcher, and kept the Trojans in the game for the middle innings.

“I really liked the way Blake competed tonight,” said Irons. “He pitched well for us, and really kept us in the game. We had some opportunities to get back in it, but just didn’t.”

The Trojans face a quick turnaround to prepare for their next game, as they are set for a 10 a.m. First pitch against Huntsville on Tuesday.

Irons is excited about getting on the field again.

“That is the great thing about the game of baseball,” said Irons. “When you let one get away in football, you have to wait a whole week to get back out there. For us, we have about 12 hours. We are going to build on what we learned today, and be ready to go in the morning.

Charles Henderson will play a double header on Tuesday,

The first game is scheduled for 10 a.m. Against Huntsville.

The Trojans will take on Austin High School at 12:30 P.m.

Both games will take place at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex.
