Charles Pierson Goodwin

Charles Pierson Goodwin, age 91, died at the Malcolm Randall VA Hospital in Gainesville, Florida on April 12, 2013.

He was born March 29, 1922 in River Falls, Alabama and was raised in Andalusia and Frisco City, Alabama.  He resided in Troy, Alabama, since his retirement in 1982.

Charles joined the Army Air Corps in June 1941, just before the invasion of Pearl Harbor.  He volunteered to become a member of a new parachute division being formed and trained at Fort Benning, Georgia.  This became the original 82nd Airborne Division.  A member of the 505th Parachute Infantry, he made every jump with the 82nd during World War II.  After the war, Charles graduated from Troy State University with a degree in biology and later attended Auburn University for advanced in marine biology.  He retired from the Federal Fish and Wildlife Service.

Charles was preceded in death by his father, Charles T. Godwin, mother Lois Woodham Goodwin, sister and brother-in-law Barbara Goodwin Browning and Oris Browning.  He is survived by his brother Ronald D. Goodwin (Sue) of McIntosh, Florida, 8 nieces and nephews, 9 great-nieces and nephews, and 2 great-great-nieces.

Graveside services, conducted by Dillard Funeral Home of Troy, will be held at Green Hills Memorial Park on Luverne Highway in Troy, Alabamaon Thursday, April 18, 2013 at 2:00 pm.
