PLAS golf qualifies for state tourney

Just about two years ago, the Pike Liberal Arts Patriots golf team hoisted a state championship trophy after the final putt fell in the cup.
The 2013 edition of the PLAS golf squad will have the opportunity to take home another state title in just more than two weeks.
Patriot head coach Gene Allen said that his team has had ups and downs throughout the season, but is looking forward to the tournament at the Selma Country Club on April 29-30.
“We only have five players on the team, but they have worked hard all season,” said Allen. “For the first three of four matches of the year, some of the team had the flu and it took some time for them to find their swing. We are down a little bit, but are working to get back to where Pike golf was a few years ago.”
The Patriots five-person roster features just two senior boys, as well as a junior and a sophomore. The final member of the squad Suzie Still, is an eighth-grader.
“She has to play from the same lengths as the boys, which can be harder,” said Allen. “But she has been the low scoring girl at every tournament we have been to.”
The State Championship match will be played over two days at the Selma County Club.
Allen feels that his team has a chance if it plays well.
“You have to be able to string a couple of good rounds together,” said Allen. “If you can do that, then you have a chance. There will be some good teams there, so you have to play your best.”
Prior to heading to Selma, the Patriots will have one final regular season match to fine tune their swings. Pike will face off with Macon-East on April 25 at noon.
