Area golf teams building for future, playoffs

While the baseball teams at their respective schools are inching towards a state title this season, the golf teams at Pike Liberal Arts and Charles Henderson are laying the foundation of what can help them years down the road.
Although the Patriots qualified for the state tournament this season, the young age of the team shows that the best may be in the future for Pike Liberal Arts.
The Patriots captured the AISA state title back in 2011 and head coach Gene Allen feels that the team can get back there in the future.
“We have some young, talented golfers,” said Allen. “We only have five players on the team, but they have worked hard all season. For the first three of four matches of the year, some of the team had the flu and it took some time for them to find their swing. We are down a little bit, but are working to get back to where Pike golf was a few years ago.”
At Charles Henderson, Coach Shelby Tuck saw his team win it’s first match of the year in the team’s final event. Although the Trojans did not qualify for the state meet, Tuck sees a bright future ahead at Charles Henderson on the links.
“We are going through a process,” said Tuck. “A few puts here or there during the season, and things might have been differently. The kids improved throughout the year, and even got a couple of birdies in that last match. We have something to build off of.”
