5. Deon Anthony

Normally a backup quarterback wouldn’t make a list of impact players but this is no ordinary backup QB. Anthony picked Troy over Pittsburgh mainly because he would be given the chance to play quarterback. Well, he has proven his value at the position.

Corey Robinson is a quality arm, but even he will tell you that he’s not a runner. Troy needed someone who could take a snap and turn up field. The Trojans have been looking for a Omar Haugabook/Jerrel Jernigan type and last year they found it in Anthony.

While it’s tough to compare Anthony to Haugabook or Jernigan, he does give Troy the same added dimension on offense as the pair of former greats.

Anthony threw for 856 yards and nine touchdowns and added another 390 yards and eight scores on the ground. He singled-handedly led the Trojans to a win over FIU when he was 29-for-41 for 245 yards and three TDs through the air. He also rushed for 115 yards and two more scores in the game.

In spring it was mentioned several times that Anthony will not only see increased playing time at QB but may also receive a few hand offs from Robinson. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see Robinson and Anthony in the same backfield for four to five snaps per game once Troy opens up its playbook.
