Volunteers work to complete community playground project
The Miracle League Playground at Troy’s Parks and Recreation Department on Enzor Road is about 85 percent complete.
Parks and Recreation Director Dan Smith said volunteers worked about 30 hours over Thursday, Friday and Saturday to help construct the area’s first playground that will allow children in wheelchairs and with other special needs to interact fully with their peers.
“J.A. Dawson (the company awarded the bid for the project) will return Thursday and Friday to complete hanging the shade canopies for the playground,” Smith said.
Smith said installation should be complete at the playground site by Friday, then a crew will come in to put down a special safety surface, which could take up to two weeks.
“About Sept. 1 is the target date for when the playground will be open to the public,” Smith said.
Playground organizers raised about $245,000 for the project – including a $50,000 grant, a $50,000 match by the City of Troy, a $25,000 donation by the Pike County Commission and many other generous community and business donations.
