Tailgating fun downtown kicks off two hours early today with music beginning at 10 a.m.

“We saw that there was such a nice crowd early in the day and we wanted to go ahead and start our entertainment earlier,” said Leigh Anne Windham with the Pike County Chamber of Commerce.

Downtown Troy Tailgate is a partnership between the chamber and City of Troy and the event series is in its second year.

“We are excited to provide this way of keeping the heart of downtown thriving,” said Shelia Jackson, Troy’s tourism director.

At 10 a.m., Shaw Pinnell, a Troy University baseball player, will bring the sounds of acoustic guitar to the square as people shop and dine downtown.

Then, from noon to 4 p.m., Alonzo Russell will entertain with his repertoire of Motown hits.

“He’s really great,” Jackson said. “He has a good following so hopefully everyone will come out to hear how talented he is.”

In addition to entertainment, local merchants and restaurants will have game day specials for patrons to take advantage of.

“Walk around, hear the music, do a little shopping,” Jackson suggested. “It’s a great way to lead into the game against Savannah State.”

Both Trojan fans and out-of-town guests are welcome to put up a tent and tailgate on the square during the event. A big screen TV will be provided to watch early games.

And, the free shuttle service moving from local hotels, to the stadium, downtown and back will be up and running during the event and after the game.

“No one has to worry about parking or driving,” Windham said. “All there is to do is have fun.”
