Pike Liberal Arts scored 31 points in the first quarter and never looked back en route to 60-0 win over Lyman Ward on Homecoming Friday.

Pike head coach Gene Allen said the quick start was what th team needed, after falling behind early in each of the two previous games in the 2013 season.

“We did a lot of good things this week,” said Allen. “We got behind the first two games, and never seemed to get on track. Tonight, we came out fast, and were able to get a lot of guys some playing time.”

The Pike Liberal Arts defense and special teams set the tone for the night early. The Patriot defense forced a three-and-out on the first possession of the game

On the punt by the Rangers, John Stephen Grice settled under the ball at the 42-yard line, before shaking one tackle and finding a seam.

“John Stephen does a great job for us in all three parts of the game,” Allen said. “He gets north and south quickly on returns and we were able to get some big plays.”

Grice also reeled in a pass for nine yards, and returned another punt more than 40 yards later in the quarter.

Not to be outdone, Adam Grice, John Stephen’s younger brother scored a rushing touchdown, and racked up two safeties on the night, as well as numerous other tackles.

“I was able to get us started with that punt return and got everyone excited,” John Stephen said. “Adam had a couple of tremendous tackles for safeties. He really showed out tonight, and I couldn’t be more proud of him and this entire team.”

Pike Liberal out gained Lyman Ward 296 yards to just 35, and the Pats allowed only 8 yards in the second half.

Allen said that he feels the team can build off the momentum from the big win.

“We needed some confidence headed back in to region play,” Allen said. “Confidence plays a big part in this game, and I think the more and more confidence we get, the better we will be.”

Pike Liberal quarterback Rush Hixon, an avid Auburn Tiger fan, tried out his best Cam Newton impersonation by picking up 132 yards rushing, along with 2 touchdowns on just six carries.

Hixon was also 4-for-6 for 81 yards and a score in the air.

Hixon was quick to shun the spotlight, and gave credit to his offensive line.

“All the credit goes to the guys up front,” Hixon said. “Those guys protect me great, and the receivers block well on the edge. From there, it’s easy.”

Pike hits the road to Eufaula next week to tangle with Lakeside.
