Those who think that people grow too old to have fun have never visited the Troy Nutrition Center.
The clients at the nutrition center only needed one word to dress up and party on Thursday… Halloween.
“All of us enjoy dressing up and being someone else for a day and what better day than Halloween,” said Hassie Green, Center director. “It’s a time when you can dress funny or crazy or glamorous or scary. So, our people had a good time planning what or who they wanted to be.”
The clients at Troy Nutrition Center celebrated Halloween or the harvest season with the Senior Carnival, which was much like the Halloween Carnivals they enjoyed as youngsters, Green said.
Halloween Carnivals were tradition for most “grammar” schools of yesteryear. Children picked up ducks and would “go fishing” for prizes while their parents played Bingo and cake walked for prizes.
“We wanted for our clients to experience the fun of the old-time Carnivals again,” Green said. “Members of the Troy University softball team participated with us and they were the judges for our costume contest. We had some wonderful costumes and it was hard for the girls to pick the winners.”
Amy Collins took first place honors with Raymond Wheeler in second place and Eva Collins in third. Mary Daniel was the runner up in the contest.
Following the Carnival, Green and several of the costumed clients visited a couple of second grade classes at Troy Elementary School and presented them with school supplies donated by the clients at the Troy Nutrition Center.
“We all know how important education is and we wanted the students to know that we support them,” Green said. “The clients donated supplies for the classes because we want them to have what they need to help them learn. We would like to be able to make donations to all the classes but this was something that we can do today. We wanted to treat the students on Halloween and we asked them not to do any tricks on Halloween or any time. To have fun but always to do right.”
