The Brundidge City Council worked from a short agenda Tuesday afternoon but considered a couple of important and timely items.

The Council approved a resolution agreement relating to the Transportation Alternative Project (TAP) that will pave the way for sidewalks along S.A. Graham Blvd. on the west side of town and Galloway Park on the north side.

The total cost of the sidewalk project will be $344,678 with the City’s 20 percent match at $68,000.

The Council also approved a South Central Alabama Development Commission Grant for supportive and nutrition services for the Brundidge Nutrition Center. The grant is the amount of $13,000.

Britt Thomas, city manager, said the grant should be amended to reflect the city’s dollar support of the grant.

“Local funding is designated at $4,900 and the City spends much more and that should be reflected in the acceptance of the grant,” Thomas said.

The City is in the process of putting up Christmas decorations in the downtown area.

Thomas said the decorations are put up in a time frame that allows for meter reading and holidays including Veterans Day and Thanksgiving.

“We have an offer of Christmas trees for the Liberty Tree Park and the grounds of City Hall,” Thomas said. “So, that will not be a concern this year.”

Thomas said work on the original Tupper Lightfoot Memorial Library building is near completion.

“Now we’re to the point of ordering furniture,” he said, adding that the cost could reach five figures. “So, some of the furniture, we’ll buy and some we’ll build. It will be a very nice facility.”

Council Member Margaret Ross attended a recent meeting of the SCAD Commission and reported that the Commission suggested that all communities encourage their senior citizens to get non-driver photo identification cards.

“A lot senior citizens don’t have driver’s licenses and it’s important for them to have some kind of photo ID cards,” Ross said.

Mayor Jimmy Ramage reminded the Council that the VFW Post 7055 will host a short Veterans Day program at 9 a.m. Monday on the grounds of the original Tupper Lightfoot Memorial Library.

“We encourage our citizens to come out and show appreciation to our veterans for their commitment and sacrifice,” Ramage said.

The annual Community Thanksgiving Service will be held at 7 p.m. Nov. 26 at Brundidge United Methodist Church.
