Georgia Mae Avery Sanders

Mrs. Georgia Mae Avery Sanders passed away Monday, November 11, 2013, at her home in Troy, Alabama. She was born in Geneva County, Alabama on November 8, 1915, to George L. and Mamie (King) Avery.

She grew up in Hartford, Alabama and attended Geneva County Schools, graduating in 1931. Afterward, she taught in various schools, the last being Florala, Alabama. She attended Troy State Teachers College and received her B.S. and M.S. Degrees in Elementary Education in 1940 and 1959, respectively. She taught at Troy Elementary School for 14 years and retired in 1970. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Troy, the Oliver Wiley Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and Delta Kappa Gamma Society.

Mrs. Sanders was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Wiley Cowart Sanders, Sr., who was co-founder and a co-owner of Sanders Lead Company. She was also preceded in death by her parents, 3 brothers and a sister.

Her survivors include her son Wiley (Toni) Sanders, Jr., her daughters Virginia Sanders and Becky S. (Charles) Young, and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be Saturday, November 16, 2013, at 2:00 pm from the Chapel of Dillard Funeral Home in Troy with Reverend Perry Green officiating. Burial will follow in the Hephzibah Cemetery.

Visitation will be held Friday, November 15, 2013 from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Dillard Funeral Home in Troy.

Pallbearers will be Chuck H. Young, John C. Young, Stephen Sanders, Scott Maddox, James Sanders, Avery Sanders.

In Lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Pioneer Museum of Alabama, the Humane Society of Pike County, the Cowart and Georgia Sanders Nursing Scholarship at Troy University, First Baptist Church of Troy, or other charitable organizations.
