The promise of the Pike County School System is to provide clean and safe schools, friendly and courteous service, academic accountability and fiscal responsibility.

Donnella Carter, administrative assistant to the superintendent of education, told the Brundidge Rotarians Wednesday that the school system is holding good on its promise.

Carter was program guest of Rotarian Anita Grant and gave the Rotarians an overview of the programs offered to the county school system’s students.

Carter said the Pike County School System has made application as a virtual high school, which is an institution that teachers courses primarily through online methods.

“A virtual high school in an innovative way to reach students,” Carter said. “We are looking for ways to teach students in a non-traditional way. We are excited about the opportunity to offer this alternative approach to receiving a diploma.”

Carter expressed pride in the new fine arts building at Pike County High School.

“The fine arts building houses the choral, band and theater programs as well as the visual arts program,” she said. “The arts have always been a priority for the Pike County School System. Funding was the issue. State and federal funds have been used to staff the fine arts department at PCHS. We are excited about the new facility and the opportunities it provides for our students.”

The Pike County School Systems has two academies to serve students, the Business and Finance Academy at Pike County High School and the Agriscience Academy at Goshen High School.

Carter said a performing arts academy is a goal for the county school system.

She said the new athletic facility at PCHS should be completed by spring or early summer.

“We are proud of that facility for the school’s athletic program. And, we also proud to be involved with the city’s recreation program and to be a part of its growth.”

Enrollment in the county school system is steady. Goshen Elementary School has the largest enrollment with Goshen and Pike County high schools following.

The Pike County School System is made up of seven schools with a total enrollment of nearly 2,500 students.

Carter said that the Pike County School System is dedicated to offering quality programs and facilities for all students whether their primary interest and aptitude are academics, the arts or athletics.
