The Charles Henderson High School Lady Trojans (6-1) did not win the Northview tournament, but they did show they would be a tough team to beat in 4A.

The Lady Trojans played three games in the tournament, winning against Dale County and Northview and losing to eventual runner-up Enterprise.

Charles Henderson coach Dyneshia Jones said her team played well during the tournament. “The team did pretty good at some points during the games,” Jones said. “We need to work on a lot of game. We’re only seven games in to our season. A lot of the teams we played have had more than 15 games already. They have had a lot more time to work on things than we have. When a basketball coach talks to her players at halftime or after the game, she is never satisfied. The team may fix mistakes from an earlier game, but make new ones in the next game. We just need more playing time.”

Jones said her team is going to focus on remaining calm during games. “We still need to work on having patience when we play,” Jones said. “Sometimes when we would make mistakes, we would stay down. I have to remind them that there are 32 minutes in a game. There’s no need for the players to rush or panic if they make a mistake. We need to always have it in our minds that there are four quarters in a game.”

Over the Christmas break, the Lady Trojans will be working on the fundamentals of the game. “I’m still not satisfied with our boxing out on rebounds,” Jones said. “It’s one of the basic fundamentals of basketball. Enterprise outrebounded us offensively and defensively. That was the key to the game.”

Looking ahead, Jones said her team will be stronger after the loss to Enterprise. Playing teams like Northview and Enterprise helps us a lot later in the season,” Jones said. “Enterprise likes to run and gun, and they have a lot of height. Even though we had an undefeated record going in to the game, I don’t know if we deserved it. The loss to Enterprise was a wakeup call. We have go to work hard to achieve our goals this year.”

The Lady Trojans are next in action on Jan. 4 when they travel to Northview for a rematch with the Cougars.
